About me
I took a year out from university after 1st year of mechanical engineering at Strathclyde. It was difficult for me to find reliable hours at a good rate, so I decided to setup my own tuition business and this very website! I am so glad I did this, as in exam season I was making £300 per week from just 15 hours of work! I chose my own hours to suit me, whilst developing important skills and generating a reliable source of income. I was also able to meet wonderful people, who valued my time. Why become a tutor?
1. Flexibility
Tutoring allows you much more flexibility and control over your hours. You can choose a convenient time that suits both you and the student, resulting in a great work-life balance. You can choose the location of your workplace; in person at the student’s home, in a public library, or even online, from your home.
2. Income
Tutoring is an amazing way to earn good money on the side, alongside your other job(s). You can work part time for just a couple of hours a week, whilst also making a positive impact on the lives of young people. Your hourly rate for tuition would be £20-£27.50/hr, depending on the level of mathematics.
3. Rewarding
Not only is tuition financially rewarding but you can also see the impact you have on a student’s life. I know from experience that when a student receives the exam results they wanted and you helped them over the past year/term, it is a great feeling! It is completely different to a classroom setting, as they can ask as many questions as they like and you can tell you are making a real difference in their education, with this one-to-one learning style.
4. Interesting work
Tutoring also develops great people skills and each lesson will be different and tailored to that students learning style. You will develop your communication and leadership skills, as you will have to be able to explain things in multiple ways and think on your feet. You will also develop professional skills, as you will be communicating and organising tuition sessions with the student’s parents. These are vital skills future employers will look for. Lastly, you will be continually expanding your knowledge in your given area, as you really dig deeper into why things are the way they are. Instead of in school, where you may have just learnt the information or method.
5. Demand
Tutors are in extremely high demand at the moment so if you have the dedication, patience and intelligence to become a tutor you will always be a sought after individual, with a high hourly rate.
